Vynova moves from natural gas to hydrogen in Flanders

Vynova is a leading European PVC and chlor-alkali company, and one of Flanders’ largest electricity consumers. To lower its carbon footprint – and the gas bill – the company has installed a new hydrogen-fired steam boiler system. With this new system in place, they will be able to use the hydrogen released as a by-product in certain production processes as fuel.

The new hydrogen-based boilers are part of a broader investment program designed to boost the sustainability performance and efficiency of Vynova’s plants. Since 2016, the group has invested more than EUR 200 million at its Tessenderlo site as part of that program. 

“We want to be the industry leader in the sustainability journey, both through continued targeted investments in state-of-the-art production units as well as by enhancing our product offering of circular, renewable and low-carbon products,” says Christophe André, CEO of Vynova.

Established in 2015, Vynova is the chlor-vinyls platform of the International Chemical Investors Group (ICIG), with headquarters in Luxembourg. It produces various base chemicals for the construction, food and medical industries as well as for water purification applications. The company has production sites in five countries and more than 1,250 employees, 590 of whom work in Flanders. The company draws upon the experience from its sites operating under the umbrella of major international chemical businesses.
