Japanese energy concern JERA is acquiring Parkwind, a Flanders-based company focusing on constructing and operating offshore wind turbines and currently involved in 4 wind parks in the North Sea. The acquisition amount totals a whopping EUR 1.55 billion.

4 wind parks in the North Sea

Headquartered in Leuven (Flanders), Parkwind is a subsidiary of Virya Energy, a holding company active in the development, financing, construction and operating of renewable energy sources. Virya Energy is 59.9% owned by the Colruyt Group, one of Flanders’ leading and largest retail corporations, while the rest is owned by Korys, the Colruyt family’s investment company.

Currently, Parkwind has stakes in 4 operational wind parks located off the coast of Flanders in the North Sea: Belwind, Northwind, Nobelwind and Northwester 2.

As part of Parkwind's management team and all the Parkwind talent across the platform, we are thrilled by this announcement. This is the start of an exciting new era for our offshore wind activities in Europe and around the globe.

A synergetic breeze

Following the acquisition deal and through the resulting synergies between the two companies, Parkwind will provide JERA with a strong platform to grow its renewables business globally, offshore wind energy in particular. Furthermore, Parkwind’s offshore wind energy business will be able to be introduced in a variety of international markets where JERA is already present or active in offshore wind development.

Committed to fully supporting Parkwind’s domestic and international expansion plans, JERA intends to continue investing in Flanders while expanding both the local team and Parkwind’s footprint globally from its existing offices in Leuven.
