Port of Genk (Flanders) enhances inland storage capacity
The Port of Genk in Flanders is in full expansion. Located on the Albert Canal between the cities of Antwerp and Liège, the inland port has begun construction of a second new storage hall with a capacity of some 2,000 square meters. The enhanced storage capacity adds to that of the nearby Port of Antwerp-Bruges, Europe’s second-largest seaport.
More water-bound storage
In total, the Port of Genk is building 4 large new storage halls, each with a capacity of 2,000 square meters. “To add to the storage capacity offered by the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, there was an urgent need for more water-bound storage possibilities at our port,” explains Heike Ulburghs, general manager of the Port of Genk.
"The Port of Genk offers an excellent connection via rail and water. We will mainly store general cargo, big bags, palletized goods and steel products in the new halls.
In addition to the new halls, an additional paved area will also be provided. The second new hall should be operational in the second quarter of 2023.
Transport hub
The Port of Genk wants to offer a broader portfolio of logistics services. “We are also renovating a number of water-bound bulk silos and some tanks for liquid products, also with water and rail connections,” says Ulburghs. “It’s clear we are investing heavily in more storage capacity, diversification and development of value-added activities.
“Genk’s role as a transport hub, with its waterfront location, rail connections and excellent road accessibility, is in full development,” she continues. “Genk is also smoothly connected to the Netherlands and Germany via congestion-free roads.”
