VITO (Flanders) approved by EU to test FFP2 and FFP3 masks
One of the few testing facilities of its kind in Europe
VITO’s expertise in air quality ensured its approval as a mask-testing facility. The Flanders-based research center is one of the few European research organizations to meet the strict European requirements for testing mouth masks. The filters of the masks are particularly subject to strict regulations.
FFP2 and FFP3 masks are those worn in the medical and healthcare sector when professionals come in contact with patients who have tested positive for the coronavirus.
With a local institution that meets the highest quality standards of the EU, we can ensure further access to high-quality mouth masks.
Air quality expertise
"We seek to play an important role in the approval of the mouth masks," says Gert Otten, project manager at VITO. "We see that our expertise in air quality is appreciated and therefore we are well-positioned to carry out the tests." VITO is one of Flanders’ 4 leading research centers and focuses on sustainable chemistry, materials, energy, land use and health.
Safeguarding continuous mask production
"The production of mouth masks in Flanders is coming up to speed,” adds Minister Crevits. “Now that Flanders also has a local institution that meets the highest quality standards of the EU, we can ensure further access to high-quality mouth masks.”
